Stoney Creek is a wonderful Nursery and Greenhouse on the South end of Minocqua. Behind one of the buildings is a vine-covered wall that is loaded with character, evocative of its nearly 30 years.

I am especially fond of this little plein air piece. I love how the orange underpaint brings a harmonious warm glow to the work. If anyone hasn’t guessed yet, reflections are one of my favorite subjects!

If you’ve even been to The Boathouse in Minocqua, you may remember seeing this fellow standing guard on the steps to the marina. The paint is flaking off in places, showing the cement underneath, and giving it a pleasing weathered look.

Behind the Black Bear Bar & Grill West of Minocqua is a lovely little river with native flowers and lily pads. I am often compelled to crop the sky out of my waterscapes, and reveal it instead in the reflection. It’s like looking down into infinity.

To walk through this beautifully landscaped nursery in Woodruff is a treat for the senses, even if you aren’t buying anything. I love the contrast of the heavy rock shapes against the delicacy and color of flowers.

At the Tubac Golf Resort in Arizona is a wonderful “Old Mexico” style restaurant called Stables, where you can look out through the arched windows onto the golf course with the steer grazing nearby.

This little plein air painting depicts that path through the woods down to our pier. A familiar sight to anyone who vacations or lives on the water in Northern Wisconsin. A walk down a path like this always promises the special kind of relaxation that only being on the water can give.

This was my first foray into painting a forest, which is a challenge given the quickness required by the plein air process. I was pretty happy to have pulled off at least an indication of the different shapes and colors of the various kinds of foliage in that wall of green.

I will always remember this plein air painting morning. 7AM, a storm was rolling in, and the flies were biting, and I was racing to finish while the rain drops started falling. Every time I look at this I can feel the approaching storm and smell the air again! Plein air painting gets you focused “in the moment” like nothing else!

On the shores of Lake Michigan is a park with rock outcroppings, and the clearest water you ever saw. Balanced on one of those rock ledges I painted this quickly while the flies tried to chase me away!
