These are my grandchildren, and they bring back memories of picnics on that very same beach when my children were small, and it’s like time stopped. Nothing has changed. I love the composition of this painting because in breaking the rules, it tells a story. The climber on the left, facing away from the scene, clearly has somewhere to go. The dramatic landscape shows heights already scaled, and the reflection in his goggles indicates the journey yet ahead. The unworldly sun flare denotes a rare and precious moment captured in time. This determined climber seems to have only paused a second for the camera, before continuing ever higher on his quest.

Shadow isn’t only blue from the light coming in the window, he is blue because he’s watching me cook dinner from the chair by the counter, and he knows he’s not allowed up any further. I love how this composition leads with the paw that is stretched forward emphasizing his yearning to get closer.

At a big turning point in my life, I sought comfort camping alone in the forests of Northern Wisconsin, and was taken by the wild grape vines. They touched me so, I hazarded a painting for the first time in over 10 years.
